Post by: JohnS on October 02, 2011, 06:59:56 PM
My friends and I were playing around with this. One guy brought down a few Smak Sticks and we went unarmed vs the stick...Jesus,you better have your shit wired tight you are unarmed against  someone that has a stick and has a little training. It was a real eye opener.Well I will just close on him:You eat punjos and he breaks away and whales away...

It is no joke.  Best thing to do is make yourself armed.  In real life, look around and use your imagination to find or make a weapon.

Most people will swing the stick  just as they throw their first strike ,like a haymaker, large looping swing,on a downward, outward to inward arc,
So yes go into to the attacker at an angle toward the weapon bearing limb, parry it,strike it,wrap it,lock it up ,or what ever works for you, disarm them and or down them.
Always go into the attack.

agree-practise as he starts the roundhouse strike-burst in-close with him using your outer forarm as a deflector -wrap as you punch to face area.
Practise leaning into him -dont stand straight-be on your tip toes as you move in-remember the end of the stick is moving faster than where he is holding it.Do repeated practise slow motion where he starts the swing
and you move in-then speed it up-lastly practise as he runs at you.

There are blocking tricks here and, yes, it must be wired tight.

Good man with a stick will give you a beating.  A good man with a stick can also kill you.

This is a less lethal weapon. protect appropriately when training.

At work and being in the Navy, some of my shipmates tried to use the stick on me when horseplaying and I took theh stick away from him. And also, another one tried to pull a blade, I snatched his blade too after I struck him so hard on his forearm muscle. But I warned not to ever do that again, or else he won't be so lucky. Both were befuddled by my sudden actions too and figured out that I am not the one to be messed with. I don't mind the horseplay with the stick. But with a live blade, that is no joke and I have no patience for that kind of horseplay.

Vic-my personal opinion--people who play with real blades like you mentioned are not wrapped to tight ;D-WW

Last night we did more of the same stuff...with a longer stick/28 in I was trying a trick.I was using a t shirt to try and snag the stick so that I could close.I pulled it off 4 out of 12 times. We have a training weapon that we use to represent a billy club, about a foot long. Its awful. The larger weapon packs more wallop but the shorter one it keeps hitting you and its hard to keep track of it.wham.wham.wham.Its there.KentBob is correct. We train to see what would happen. For real you dont want to go without a weapon against one.

I would be REMISS not to post this here.
One of the 5 DVDs...one hour...is a one hour progression on unarmed vs the stick. Pretty good DVD. Tens of drills.
