This could be wrong but it seems that there was a lot less contact without gloves. Also Bobby when he threw a punch at the head seemed to use rabbit punches.

I think there were way less punches thrown. A difference without gloves.

You always hear about the old bare knuckle boxers going for incredible amounts of rounds and time, this could be what it looked like.

Boxing is VERY much a sport. This is much better. The ref is bad and the opponent needed much better clinch work for this type of fight.
Bareknuckles, toe the line. Much better. Stops some of the stupidity of the sport that has developed from this version.

Have been waiting to see this for a while. As a lover of classical pugilism I wouldn't say this was anywhere near actual bareknuckle pugilism - pretty much modern boxing minus gloves, which is v different. To make it relevant you'd need to fight with throws allowed - and trained by the fighters - which would make it look a lot more like the UFC but without the tedious groundfighting.
Plus - a square 'scratch' to 'come up to'
Plus - a kneeman and bottle holder
Plus - shirtless with breeches and spiked shoes on turf.
Plus - a much longer guard to deter closing and throwing
Plus - blocking punches with the elbow/head to break the opponent's hands
Plus - the 'chopper'!
Plus - Chancery - i.e. holding they guy's head under your arm and punching him in the face (or by the hair).
