I still have my great grandfather's short cudgel, I think my dad has his bata. Some of it looks like Jo techniques which makes sense given the similar sizes.

Most, if not all of the moves in that video can be found in Hock's DMS system.

Yup. Actually every one of them.

Two points though-

  - have to protect their thumbs, not brace the stick with the thumb up. If the tnumb gets smashed? YIKES! The thumb can be caught and locked against the stick, quite easily.

  - might be too much stick versus stick as in a martial artsy approach.

Good demo/use of the SMS (one handed grip) changing to DMS (two handed grip and vice-versa, a great tactic. And good demo/use of "While Holding" as in striking and kicking while holding a stick.

When I was young and stick fighting the thumb up position was my absolutely favorite target....ended many a fight that way.   Yes, thumbs do break every once in a while.  ;)

didn't say when I was young and nice.

I'm a beginner so excuse me for the noob questions.

Essentially, how is it different from Filipino stick fighting?

Even if your thumb wasn't up the professor would still hit you on the thumb. SOB had one hell of an aim
