Done Silat since th e late 1980s. Collected a few instructorships in it.
There are all kinds of Silat, hundreds, so there is no one broad answer if its "good" or "bad."

It's usually all heavily flavored, as in style, look and like though. Something I don't hanker too.

It tastes like chicken.

I've always been curious about Silat, since I was in my teens.  Marc Halleck's Panantukan-Silat combatives is an excellent way to learn some FMA, as well as some Silat.  After being exposed to it, through him and his DVDs, I like it even more.  Some of those guys are amazingly flexible.  I don't even think the Shaolin students can move the way the Silat guys can.  I don't know how well they'd be able to handle themselves in regular fight, but they can certainly move well.

I still love Silat, though.  I just think it's cool.

You are welcome. Unfortunately, this style is usually taught  in French. I'm a lucky guy because it's also taught in my native language. :D

Hi guys

I'd seen a few pencak silat DVD's in the past and thought it was a bit "hollywood", or at least the DVDs I saw were. Thought it might be hard to use in a real confrontation.

I recently bought a set of DVD's (I'm a combat junkie!) from a guy over here in the UK called Eddie Quinn. He has taken the figure 8 movement from silat and applied it to reality training. Here's his youtube channel. The music on the videos is a bit nuts but I've been practicsing the hammerfists (hence my earlier post) and movement and can see the benefit of it. Would be interested to hear other peoples opinion:

What's interesting is one of the DVD's is full contact on a bulletman (guy in a protective suit). Like most things the actual style goes out the window but the hammerfists look pretty brutal. Practising the figure 8 motion Eddie teaches has certainly improved my hammerfist power.

Since seeing this I've become a lot more open to silat and kali, which I believe also practises the figure 8 but could be completely wrong!

Jay-if it works for you then use it- simple as that-if your hammer fist is what you like then continue on mate-WW

I have taken some elements of Silat when I did my JKD training in 1995. And I still integrate them in my personal techniques.
