Title: Boztepe - Gracie Challenge?
Post by: Hock on September 21, 2012, 08:15:34 AM
"Emin Boztepe (born 17 June 1962) is an American martial artist of Turkish origin who held German nationality prior to naturalization. He first came to prominence for his fight in 1986 with noted Wing Chun practitioner William Cheung, and he continued to gain attention in the 1990s with a public challenge of the Gracie family. He was a notable member of Leung Ting's Wing Tsun organisation until 2002, when he formed his own organisation."

Wonder what the Gracie Challenge was? I haven't heard about that?

Yeah... I remember Rorion and Emin exchanging letters in Inside Kung Fu Magazine, I can probably still dig them up.

I seem to remember his crowning achievement beating up an old William Cheung at a seminar Cheung was teaching. Not sure how accurate that is. The video looked like a mugging.

People really got sick of Chueng and his inflated, self-supremacy.  Chueng is rather incorrigible to be around (this from NUMEROUS witness testimonies from many once close to him).

There was also the case when Chueng claimed to be the Chueng that Bruce Lee once said was the "greatest fighter." That was a different Chueng! But that didn't stand in his way of a nifty advertising campaign.

Boztepe had enough of this and confronted him. It is an interesting story and can be found here on this forum somewhere, and on the net. Of course, it only slowed Chueng down a bit, who said he was wearing the wrong slippers that day...

I any case, it is probably safe to say that Cheung was nowhere near the physical equal of Boztepe and it was an ugly beatdown more than an actual "fight".

A man's gotta know his limitations... ;)

That is why I never thought highly of him. Any martial artist who does that sort of thing is unworthy of my respect.

Still, if Boztepe wanted to challenge him, do it face to face at an arranged place to fight, not attacking him without warning, especially in front of his students.

I understand that (and I am friends with many Melbourne, Australia Chueng HQ people, old and new), that these challenges and all challenges were denied beforehand.

I don't advocate this stuff, just reporting the news. A lot of people think this was a dirty trick.

One thing it did show was how conditional any system is to work.

Thought I would  throw this in to the discussion-I think I took a  seminar from this instructor when I was in dubai a  few  months ago-he has a school in the Gold hotel 40th  floor-when i went to the seminar i was there for about 2  hours-he had about 12 students there attending-we worked  on trapping and punching-no political discussions at  all.
He treated me ok-WW

As far as I remember, Cheung challenged everyone in a magazine and Emin accepted. He went to the seminar, confronted him with his challenge and said that he's going to fight him right now.

You can see the result in the video.

About the Gracie-Challenge:

Emin wanted to fight Royce, but (his version) the Gracie's wanted Emin to attend a UFC not knowing who he had to face before fighting Royce. Emin wanted to fight Royce right away. This went back and forth with no result.
