As reported from Louisville, Kentucky

Deputy's weapon is stolen during attack

A man attacked a Jefferson County sheriff's deputy yesterday afternoon in the 900 block of South Shelby Street and took the deputy's weapon.

Deputy Tom O'Nan had stopped to drop off a portable heater to a family when a man came up to him from behind and put him in a headlock, said Carl Yates, a spokesman for the sheriff's department.

Yates said the two men wrestled on the ground, and the assailant was able to get O'Nan's weapon out of his holster and run to a waiting vehicle.

"We don't know at this point what the motive is," Yates said, adding that O'Nan was in uniform and on his way to the Hall of Justice downtown. "For anyone to attack a uniformed armed officer is unusual. There has to be easier ways to steal a weapon."

O'Nan was not hurt and will return to work Monday.

Being aware of your surroundings is 90 percent of self defense. How did this guy sneak up behind him? Why didn't he have a backup weapon?

It is a tuff way to get a handgun for sure.
