In the market for a handgun
« on: February 09, 2006, 02:24:15 PM »

Hey guys...I'm in the market to buy a handgun for home-defense.

I need something with adequate stopping power, but small enough for a 5 foot tall, pissed off, Fillipino woman to handle.

Any suggestions that won't set me back $600?

As I've stated before, my research into this area says that the .40 caliber is ideal for what you are talking about.  Small enough to be handled by almost anyone, large enough to provide a decent amount of stopping power.  This is what I reccommend to all my buddies who are looking for a handgun for home defense.  I got a Glock 27, which is a subcompact .40 cal.  It set me back less than 400, but that is because glock was running a special for military at that point in time.  I don't know the prices on the full size and compact handguns.  You may want to go with the subcompact anyway, if her hands are small.  For as big as I am, I do not consider my hands very big, and capable of controlling a .45, so that is why I went with the .40.  So, that is my advice in a nutshell.

I agree with Kent on the gun however my wife also 5ft tall felt the recoil of the 40 to be a bit to much. She loved the Glock26 whick is the same sized gun suggested by Kent only in 9mm. Enough to stop the badguy without making her a flich machine. Brand new in Tampa for 490.00. Add some night sites for 80 bucks more. great handgun.

I agree with three wife wanted the compact Glock desperately until she tried to shoot it.  She hated the recoil and went back to her nineteen.

It doesn't have to be a compact either...the grip isn't any smaller than the full size...all they've done is shortened the barrel and the length of the grip.

G19 is another great choice. Same gun just 1/2inch +or- longer barrel &grip. Shoots like a freakin dream.........both of them.

The 19 or 17 are both great gun in (dare I say) 9mm.    Take her to the range and have her shoot a lot of different guns.   Just make sure the 9mm is in a +P load.

I've seen a lot of small women shoot a .45 very well...don't turn away from it too quickly....a 5 foot tall, pissed off, Fillipino woman can handle the 45.

'Advanced' is being able to do the basics, despite what else is happening.
