question about the Harmonious Spring Drill
« on: May 04, 2009, 08:01:37 PM »

Hey Sifu Tackett, or any JKD practicioner who would like to share, would you be willing to share a little about the nature and purpose of this drill, I have never seen this particular drill in Wing Chun, I beleive it is actually a praying mantis drill. Did Bruce study any praying mantis kung fu?

Probably need to ask that one on Tim's JKD page.

It is a Mantis drill and is used to counter someone striking you from a double arm outside reference sticking point.  They practice by sticking to the opponent's arm reacting with a bong sao or a tan sao; those used simultaneously (one arm bongs and the other tans) I think is called a quan sao, since off the double jut sao you don't know which arm is going to strike first.  I hope that helps.

It is also a defense against a jut and straight hit.

"Wise guy, eh." smackity smack smack. "Why, you...." ;D

Seriously, though, some quick hands.
