Eye Jab Intercept Drill

I use this drill to introduce the eye jab as a counter to a lead hand straight punch as well as introducing the concept of interception/simultaneous attack and defense. Trainer and trainee begin in matching leads same hand and foot forward. The trainer will feed the trainee 8 lead hand straight punches. The Trainee will have 8 responses as follows.

1. Lead hand eye-jab slides over the top of the punch knocking it off line connecting with the eye, trainee's rear hand floats in a protective/supportive position.

2. Taking a slight step off the line towards 3 o'clock, with the lead hand a whisking motion is used originating at 3 o'clock knocking the punch off line and connecting with the eye, trainee's rear hand floats in a protective/supportive position.

3. Lead hand eye-jab slides underneath the punch, knocking it off line and connecting with the eye, trainee's rear hand floats in a protective/supportive position.

4. Taking a slight step off the line towards 9 o'clock, with the lead hand a whisking motion is used originating at 9 o'clock knocking the punch off line and connecting with the eye., trainee's rear hand floats in a protective/supportive position.

5. Repeat 1-4, trainee using the rear hand

Switch leads and repeat

of course you can change this drill up in a variety of ways, one way is to have the trainer also feed the a rear hand straight punch running the same sequence
you can add alternate lead and rear hand punches
you can add moving around
you can branch off in to combat scenarios/take-downs/locks/finishes etc.

I also do a eye jab vs. hammer fist drill using the basic 12-3-6-9 angles, encouraging the student to block/evade/parry the hammer fist and use the eye jab
if they need to do it in two beats that's okay, but I encourage them to neutralize the attack and respond in one beat.
