Note the short mention of the Navy Seals training, that he has NEVER exploited or barely mentioned.

I didn't know he had passed away. His two books are in the short stack of martial arts books I'm not giving away. He was ahead of the curve.

I have only attended Hartsell seminars and never had any privates with him or anything like that but I am still surprised how much I still retain from them.

I could use quite a bit of his info for police work and arresting people. Then of course, some of it was sporty, too, but I enjoyed it.

He was a pioneer and as a result we were doing ground fighting in the 1980s, well before it was...cool. That's Larry....

Larry was the "Strong Arm" for Bruce Lee, if anyone came in for a challange, he would usually handle them. Guro Dan tells stories about it, and how he was one of the best kickers before his auto accident, then he could'nt kick so he switched to ground work.

I have always loved Larry's lock flows. When Erik Paulson starts flowing he looks like a hybrid between Larry and Yori Nakamura. You can really see the influence he had.

Get a few minutes into this video and see Dallas Cowby superstar Randy White and Larry Hartsell. When Larry was in the DFW area, the seminar often included a group dinner with Randy White. (To further the coincidence, in this segment, is the Copper's Fitness Gym where I work out and film the latest training films we do.)

The December 1994 issue of Full Contact was dedicated to Ground Fighting in America.

American Icon Larry Hartsell was interviewed for the issue.

The opening paragraph offers "Larry Hartsell reaches out his hand and as mine comes in contact I am impressed at the power of his grip.  It is not the bone-crushing squeeze of someone who has something to prove, but rather the subtle touch of a man who is wonderfully in control of both his physical and mental being."

I trained with Larry at a seminar in Walla Walla, Washington and then visited he and his wife, Debra, at their home in Marina Del Rey, California.  What a visit that was!

The consumate gentleman, mentor, teacher, instructor and human being.

He would show you a technique, work it with you, then when he felt you had it he'd tap you on the shoulder or the forearm or the wrist and say "There, I've given it to you now make it yours!"
