Hurt cop shoots alleged gunman
BY DARYL KHAN. STAFF WRITER; Freelance writer Jerome Burdi contributed to this story.

A police officer last night shot a man reaching for his waistband, where NYPD officials believe he had a gun.

The officer, whose name was not released, was on foot patrol in Brownsville shortly after 6 p.m. when he was approached by a woman who residents identified as Donetta Johnson.

Johnson had left a car near the corner of Chester Street and Livonia Avenue and told the officer the father of her child had punched her. She had swelling around her lips.

Meanwhile, the suspect, identified by a family member as Jahmein Williford, 29, slipped out of the car and walked toward a nearby barbershop, according to police. He grabbed a bicycle and launched it at the officer, knocking him to the ground and causing a 10-inch gash in his arm.

Police said the officer, who is black, heard someone shout "Yo, shoot the -- !" using a slur for a black person.

The officer, bleeding on the ground, said he saw the suspect reach for his waistband. The officer pulled his gun and fired at least one shot, striking the suspect in the leg. As the suspect fell, his friends ran over and, police believe, grabbed the suspect's gun and fled.

Those two suspects remained at large last night.

The officer was taken to Jamaica Hospital, and the suspect was taken to The Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center. Both are in stable condition.

Family and friends of Williford, said Williford had walked away from an argument with Johnson when police shot him in the leg from behind.
