Well, yeah sure.
I have a few .38s laying around. Love revolvers.
The only thing else to consider is a small semi-auto.

I love my model 66 S&W Combat Master. I've had it for almost 30 years.
Goes bang every time.
And since I'm getting old, I already have it so I won't need to get another.
Plus there's always my colt python.....

Pfft wheel guns are for old people

Only old people call them "wheel guns"  ;)

But seriously, revolvers have been around so long for good reason. There are less things that can go wrong, they are easier to understand for most people, snubbies are easy to conceal, they generally shoot from the pocket unimpeded, they are good for muzzle contact shooting if needed, etc. The big draw-back is less ammo and less accuracy at distance but if it's a self-defense gun (as opposed to a combat gun) you aren't likely to need more than 5 rounds and the attack will most likely not require distance accuracy anyway.
