Things to have with you... - An electric-powered airsoft pistol (maybe two or three as they break easy. They are cheap. If we use gas or real sims, it will be announced in the seminar page. - Then a replica pistol (rubber/platic) and a holster and belt. - Street pants! No sweats or spandex. We need pockets and a belt. Even shorts are fine if you have pocketsn and a belt - Replica long gun WITH SLING if you can get one - Training knife. fixed blade with sheath - Training knife, folder with clip - Training stick, about 30 inches long - Expandable baton if possible - Two focus mitts - One kicking shield - Any related body padding you want, like eye protection, elbow and knee pads, whatever Some of these things may be available at them location and sometimes not. Hock,
I'm putting together equipment for the seminars and have a couple of questions. 1) Gun: Any particular style (plastic, wooden, rubberband, etc.)? 2) Holster: will a crossman airsoft holster work? 3) Knife: the hard knife, does it matter if it's single or double sided? 4) eye protection: Will shooting glasses work? Looking forward to the training! Thanks, Bob |

Just to remind everyone, the last thing to do before you walk out the door to attend the seminar is to check the shopsite page for the seminar.
http://www.hockscqc.com/shop/08-hock-hochheims-self-defense-seminars.html Any last minute updates, weather problems etc, will be listed there. We had one canceled in 2009 for a sudden, bad snowstorm. And we canceled the June Toronto this year because it is the same weekend as the G20 summit (riots anyone?) Hock |

The fighter that impresses me, is the one that just executes nuts and bolts movements.
He is styless. Generic. Efficient. Crisp and clean. The essence of combat. We have many people like this. Too many to name here. Jim McCann. Tom Barnhart. Joe Hubbard,....just way, way too many to name here. These people fight like efficient machines. Unidentifiable in style. Unconfined. Customized for their body size, shape, strength. UFC fighters, too, but they still linger and exist in a myth of the duel, that stand-off format with some rules restricting their otherwise, race car, engine-efficiency. Rules hold back like old regulators on cars that control maniac speeds. The rules make the style and the methods. When they hit the ground? Many still look like wrestlers. Thats why efficient groud n' punders are now usually winning. They shun the expected look and style. Ignore the expected trained moves. They do not "fall into" expected routine. Hock |

In the hand course, stick course, knife course, gun course, FMA-PAC course...An instructor can make/promote one rank level under them.
Basic instructor can only promote their students to levels 1 and 2, No instructorships Advanced instructor can only make a basic instructor and up to level 5 Expert instructor can make basic and advanced and up to level 8 A level 10, a so-called "master" (as in range master not martial arts masters) makes up to 9 Each level above makes a level under them. In a way, work in the individual courses help build the time and grade for the CQC Group. As far as the CQC Group... Only I can make a Hand, Stick, Knife, Gun Close Quarter Combat Group rank or instructors, as each individual CQC Group level is like its own "black belt test." This is real slow going and only a few folks, maybe less than 95 hold (now in 30 years of travel), CQC Group rank, yet I teach over 1,000 people a year, sometimes more. An instructor earns the right to purchase rank certificates at a discounted, "wholesale" rate and charge "retail." Ask me for that information sheet. Ask at Hock@hockscqc.com Hock |

I also thought that the "Elephant and the Blind Men" story was such an interesting study. People only perceive what they touch in the story and cannot describe the elephant.
Soldiers, cops, fighters, train in this small-minded, manner also. - each martial art is but a blind man's perception compared to the mixed weapon chaos of reality. - each martial sport is but a blind man's perception compared to the mixed weapon chaos of reality. - we forget the bigger picture, often completely naive and ignorant of it. http://www.wordinfo.info/words/index/info/view_unit/1/?letter=B&spage=3 The raging elephant logo represents this issue. And some of the other foundation ideas I think about....
-The "Who, What, Where, When, How and Why" Combat Equation This can be taught at the Army war College or a small citizen self defense course. -Myth of the Duel (it's a mixed weapons, no-rules, ambush-to-showdown world) -Reducing the Abstract...in training. (Making the Surreal - real.) -Minimization of Wound Theory and the Tenacity of Life Theory -Seamless transition of tactics from standing to ground. "Practice something standing? Try it on the ground." This is a mandatory survival basic. -Maximize seamless transition training of hand, stick, knife, gun where possible -A solid Unarmed Combat course is also the foundation for all mixed-weapon fighting -"I will never tell you how to fight your fights!" Fighting methods are an individual's selection process in the end, after proper education, experimentation and exercise - Some level of acting is required to successfully teach reality - "Fortune favors the prepared" - Physical size matters. - Moving...Combat "footwork" includes all down-on-ground maneuvers, sport/ring footwork AND obstacle course work, without weapons, and with all modern weapons in hand. - Thrive in Chaos. - "Expect Chaos. Plan for Chaos. Thrive in it" - list to continue as I recall my notes These and other topics are sometimes written about here on the forum, or they are written about in my blog. http://www.hockscqc.com/blogs/index.html Hock |

And of course, we need to see instructors about once every year or every year and a half in a seminar, barring emergencies. This is our renewal/recertification process. No other re-cert costs.
This keeps me in personal touch with instructors, keeps them abreast of changes and improvements. Hock |
